Notre Dame is currently experiencing a doubling in the number of majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The number of Chemistry majors in the class of 2007 has risen to 20 from an historical average of 10, while the biochemistry program has grown from an historical average of 12 students to 22 in the class of 2007. The number of majors in the Chemistry and Biochemistry majors continues at these elevated levels in the classes of 2008 and 2009.

In the fall of 2006, we began teaching classes, discussion sections, and laboratories in the Jordan Hall of Science, a brand new 200,000 square foot, $75 million building that includes 40 undergraduate laboratories for chemistry, physics and biology; two 250-seat lecture halls; a 150-seat multimedia lecture hall, a greenhouse, herbarium, and observatory. This state-of-the-art facility gives Notre Dame undergraduates access to the most advanced research equipment and learning facilities at any university in the world.

Students from the department and College of Science are among the most satisfied with the education they have received from Notre Dame, and most remark that their Notre Dame experience prepared them greatly for the challenges of their careers, 62.4% of science undergraduates claim that they would "definitely" re-enroll if given the opportunity, and 73.2% say that their education was definitely worth the investment.

We are proud of our students. They are the best Notre Dame has to offer, and we are confident that we are providing them with the kind of rigorous and comprehensive background in Chemistry and Biochemistry that will let them accomplish anything that they choose to do.
