Topics covered include an overview of the fundamentals of crystal structure and solid-state physics; the differences between surface and bulk properties; the effect of defects, impurities, and local structure on surface properties and reactivity; the practical and theoretical details of scanning-probe techniques for investigating surfaces; and nanotechnology.
