60490 - Inorganic Chem of Lanthanides

Semester: Spring

A comparative course in lanthanide-actinide inorganic chemistry with
an emphasis on relevant questions associated with energy production
and environmental contamination. The focus will be on the impact of
the f-electron configuration on properties such as valence
stabilities, redox behavior and optical and magnetic properties. The
application of modern analytical techniques to these problems will be
highlighted including synchrotron-based spectroscopies including XANES
and EXAFS as well as scattering studies such as HEXS, SAXS, and
reflectivity. The importance of complementary techniques including
laser studies will also be included.
