A nine-connected net.

Networks formed with connectivities greater than six are very unusual due to limitations in coordination numbers at metal centers. Our approach to the preparation of high-connectivity networks is to utilize cage compounds containing large alkali metals as nodes or points of polymer extension. The example shown above is a simplification of the first ever nine-connected net. It is built from rubidium hexamers that each connect to nine neighboring hexamers. For further information see: Chem.
