Biography

Fr. Joseph Walter received his BS degree, magna cum laude, in June 1951 from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Following graduation, he entered the University of Pittsburgh on an Atomic Energy Fellowship with Henry Freiser in conjunction with Foil Miller at Mellon Institute and Dr. Jonas Salk of the University Medical School; then received his PhD in 1955. He studied theology from 1957 to 1961 at Holy Cross College and was ordained to the priesthood in February 1961. He was appointed professor of chemistry in 1961, and to the position of chairman of the Department of Preprofessional Studies at Notre Dame in 1971.

Research Interests

Since 1971, he has seen almost 5,500 graduates of the department of preprofessional studies become physicians, dentists, and other health professionals. Father Walter was on the Executive Board of the Central Association of Advisors to the Health Professions from 1972 until 1976, then became president of the association from 1977 until 1980. He was initiated as a member of the Indiana Gamma chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the honorary premedical society in 1969, became national vice-president of the 168 Chapter, a 130,000-member organization in 1980 and national president from 1984 until July 1992. He is presently editor of the AED national newsletter and was elected in March 1994 to be the lifetime honorary national president of Alpha Epsilon Delta. He is also a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon.

Father Walter has published approximately 29 research papers in the fields of inorganic chemistry and medical education. He has also delivered numerous papers on analytical and coordination chemistry, as well as premedical education, at national meetings. During his years of active chemistry research, he educated approximately 20 students to the Ph.D. degree and hosted several post-doctoral investigators. He received the President's Award from the University of Notre Dame in May 1983.

He became professor emeritus on May 25, 2005, and is enjoying retirement.
